Earth Day 2011
Take It Back - for Earth’s Sake

By Carolyn Chase

What do you do when you’ve bought something and it turns out not to be what you really wanted? You take it back, right?
What should happen when you see litter on the beach — or in your park or yard? What if you get a contaminated toy or product? You want the polluters to take it back.

What about when someone lies or misrepresents themself? They need to take it back. Which leads to this year’s Earth Day theme: Take It Back!

The 22nd annual EarthFair in Balboa Park, the world’s largest free annual environmental fair and Earth Day celebration, will take place on Sunday, April 17th from 10am to 5pm. A one-stop shop for all things environmental, EarthFair features over 350 exhibitors, special theme areas, Food Pavilion, special Kids’ Activity Area and entertainment.

Register to exhibit, sponsor, volunteer or advertise at The Children’s Earth Day Parade begins at 10:30am; register online at Special free exhibit areas for recycled arts and crafts, eco-art and energy-efficient transportation, see for details.

For our Very Important Planet...
Every year, EarthWorks recognizes business, clubs, organizations and individuals that deserve a special recognition for their work on behalf of a clean, healthy environment. The EARTH Awards will be given out Wednesday, May 11 at the VIP (Very Important Planet) Reception in Kearny Mesa. Nominate your favorite environmental hero (before April 15), make reservations to attend and purchase tickets at

EarthFair and the VIP Reception and EARTH Awards will be brought to you by San Diego EarthWorks, a committed network of volunteers in service for a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for all living things. EarthFair is sponsored in part by a grant from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.
