Leading Women’s Wisdom Teachers
One-Day Conference on Spirituality and Healing
By MaryAnn Ready
April 21, 2001, has been set as the date for “Celebrate The Spirit — A Shared Journey To Spiritual Growth & Healing,” a one-day retreat in Orange County featuring author and healer, Deena Metzger and performance artist and spiritual teacher, Nina Wise. Using music, movement, meditation, storytelling, visualization, vocal expression and other techniques, these renowned women’s wisdom teachers will guide attendees on an exploration of their own diverse spiritual paths, and the way in which spiritual awakening brings about healing on all levels: personal, political, environmental and global.
“Celebrate The Spirit” is presented by Women In Spiritual Practice, an Irvine-based group founded by MaryAnn Ready and Bonnie L’Allier. The group’s events are designed to bring together women of all ages, backgrounds, professions, and religious traditions to explore the dimensions of feminine spirituality, deepen spiritual practice and learn from other traditions.
Says L’Allier, “We are honored to be able to provide a retreat where women interested in deepening spiritual practice have the opportunity to learn from outstanding women’s wisdom teachers like Deena Metzger and Nina Wise.
“Celebrate The Spirit” is an opportunity for Southern California women to join together to explore, share, and celebrate — then step back into their lives newly inspired. It is a day that invites the heart to open in solitude and community.”
Deena Metzger is a novelist, poet, essayist, storyteller and healer who has taught and counseled for over 30 years. Among her published works are “Writing For Your Life: A Guide and Companion to the Inner Worlds”, and the recent critically acclaimed novel “The Other Hand”. Ms. Metzger lectures and teaches the ways of writing and creativity, nationally and internationally, and has developed a training program for the 21st century in the creative, political, spiritual and ethical aspects of healing.
Nina Wise is a performance artist and teacher who has devoted her life to researching the connection between spirituality and creative self-expression. Known for her spontaneous performance works, Ms. Wise offers workshops in improvisation and has developed a program, “Healing in Motion”, that explores the healing potential of creative self-expression grounded in spiritual practice. She has worked in conjunction with the Commonweal Cancer Help Program, providing courses for women with cancer. Wise has performed original pieces in the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America, and is the recipient of three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
